The use of AI programs, e.g., ChatGPT, will be strictly prohibited for this course. While you may use these programs for other courses in your studies, the use of AI directly contradicts the aims of this class, and therefore is not allowed. Our goal is to think critically and independently, to generate one’s own ideas – much of that process is difficult, and at times, leaves one feeling stuck; that is the point, keep reading, keep thinking, and work through it. I am interested in the growth of your ideas and your critical thinking skills. This class focuses on process, not product.
“If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time (or tools) to write. Simple as that.”
– Stephen King
You may not submit any work generated by an AI program as your own. If you include material generated by an AI program, it should be cited like any other reference material (with due consideration for the quality of the reference, which may be poor). Note that AI checking software will be applied to all written materials. Using AI generated materials as your own work is not permitted in this class, and any assignments flagged for a large percentage of AI usage will be questioned. It is understood that the AI checking software is equally as faulty as ChatGPT, therefore any false positive will result in an inquiry, but not necessarily an automatic zero.
Students are expected to be honest and ethical at all times. I expect all students to do their own writing. This means not cutting/pasting from the Internet or using AI to compose work. You'll receive no credit for the assignment, and may be issued an academic sanction. Here's what happens with a sanction:
• Your professor may set up a conference with the department chair.
• The sanction is sent to the Student Rights & Responsibilities Coordinator who will reach out to you.
• If your sanction includes serious class disruption, or you receive a second sanction, you may receive an enrollment hold for the following semester.
If you're worried that you might plagiarize without meaning to, stay away from AI (ChatGPT, Grammarly, etc.) and you should be fine.
Attendance is mandatory. Any absences must be communicated to the Professor and excused. Students are expected to turn in assignments on time, which include written assignments, reflections, and discussion contributions.
Netiquette is etiquette guidelines that govern behavior when communicating on the Internet. Observing proper netiquette guidelines ensures that communication is clear and respectful, such as:
• When communicating online, be sure to identify yourself when sending an email and include a subject line that tells the topic of the message.
• Avoid sarcasm since tone and meaning may get lost in written text.
• Be concise when communicating online because the message will be clearer.
• Use appropriate language. Avoid coarse, rough, or rude language.
• Observe good grammar and spelling.
